Eileen, as I was reading your post, I kept thinking, "I feel the same way!" It's funny, I feel as though you're speaking on behalf of us. I especially agree with your last bullet point where you mention that it is about the client and not about us. As college students, we have this wave of confidence and the desire to try any and all new things. When we encounter a client or organization that works differently, we become a bit offended or confused as to why they wouldn't warm to our ways. Once you set aside personal preferences and really try to understand why a client works a certain way, all will be set. It's been the best lesson I've learned all along!

Btw, wonderful job on NVC. The coverage speaks for itself :)

Bebeth,

I think your thoughts prove that people define generations from different point of views. I'm not sure what generation the Portland PR professionals that you talked to you are, but maybe you should ask them what even older generations thought of them when they were beginning to enter the job market.

Also, if managers believe that spring 2008 grads are unwilling to pay dues and expect jobs with little internship experience, then it means one thing - we need to prove them wrong. Manager opinions are both from experiences and popular beliefs from discussions. As a spring 2008 grad myself, I set out to be one of the many generation y'ers that shows older generations that we are hard workers, flexible, mold-able and great assets to the future American workforce. Join me on influencing behavior and beliefs. It's what we, PR people, do.

This is interesting. I just met with two young but highly successful PR professionals in Portland about the PRSSA Regional Activity I'm planning. We got on the topic of job search, and one of the PRos suggested due to a combination of tanking economy and a negative perception of our generation, it's going to be very hard for Spring 08 grads to get jobs. She said, which is something I've heard before, that many managers think our generation is basically unwilling to pay dues, expecting jobs with little internship experience, etc. This is in direct contrast with Professor Tiffany Derville's thought that too many recent grads are accepting internships when they should be looking for jobs. Seems like there's a lot of contrasting opinions out there on our generation's aptitude.

Great tips Eileen! The three "P's" are my favorite. I've seen the good effects when I put them into action, and one of the most important is just the way it makes you feel about yourself. When you feel positive and in control you feel much better about yourself. Taking initiative and being proactive really sets you apart from the crowd because there are so many passive "go along with the crowd"ers in this world. You're a much better candidate for any kind of job if you are willing to act on your own obviously.

Good observations.

Hi Eileen,

Thanks for your comment on my blog; I am so excited for you to start at WE! You will love it here; WE is a great agency to work for (and OSB is a great team!) :)

And I am glad you are already taking first steps in learning e-mail management, because you will need it here! (not to scare you or anything...) ;)

See you March 31st, and good luck finishing up spring term. Shout if you have any questions in the meantime.

Stephen - Thanks for the book tip. I'll add it to my reading list. I'm sure my tips for e-mail management will evolve a little more once I begin working, but I'm still optimistic in believing that it is completely manageable =)

Ged - I will definitely contact you when I start. It'll be about three weeks from now. Thanks for the welcome!

Bianca - that is a good point. He is only one of many other supervisors and employers.

Robert - thanks for the link. Active communication between all parties is the way to succeed.

Hey,

That's excellent news! An internship with a global PR agency, huh? Congratulations. It's a pretty amazing start for your transition from student to professional. I have a friend that works at Wag Ed's London office. They're a great agency.

Oh, yeah, email. I have issues with email. My main issue is I receive too many of them! :-)

Seriously, though, with blogging and other social networks I belong to I'm inundated with email not just with work communication but personal communication too. It can get a little out of hand.

You're right though, you have to develop some kind of system that works best for you. Have you read the book, Getting Things Done?

http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Things-Done-Stress-Free-Productivity/dp/0142000280

This supposed to be the killer book in productivity and time management. I actually bought a copy for myself but, well...um, I haven't had the time to read it yet.
